The question is usually about engineering capacity rather than ambition. The whitelabel app gets you to market without developers, because the interface already exists and is deployed for you. The API gives you full control of the experience, but you build that experience yourself.

Because both run on the same infrastructure, starting with the whitelabel app does not close off the API later. It is reasonable to launch on whitelabel to prove a corridor, then integrate directly once volume justifies the engineering time.
